Coastal Cabin Trip

17 - 19. October 2025

Eight eager participants set out to explore the western islands of Norway. Armed with fishing rods, a bottle of the cheapest vodka, and a sense of adventure, this was bound to be a trip for the books.

We got an early start Friday with a sunrise ferry trip to the island of Sula. From there, we boarded the bus to Hardbakke and then hopped onto a small boat that took us all the way out to the island of Gåsvær. Here in the sun, we explored the small island, took in the views, and greeted the locals—mostly just curious sheep. After a lunch break and a dip in the ocean that restored our energy, we took the ferry back to Sula and hiked to our DNT cabin, which would be our home for the next two days. After settling in, we got the fishing rods set up, and five minutes later we had dinner! On our first night, we caught three tasty pollock, which we enjoyed as additional protein with our rice and chili. To wind down, we made some hot chocolate, spiked it with vodka, and headed to bed.

The next morning, we started on a hike down to the small town of Hardbakke. The hike turned out to be more of a bushwhacking experience, since the trail tended to disappear. However, the scenery was wonderful, and the thought of stopping for snacks at the Spar in Hardbakke kept us going. Once at Hardbakke, we immediately stopped at the store, wolfed down some treats, and bought some sides for our dinner. The main course would be the fish we’d catch, of course Fueled on snacks and high hopes for dinner, we headed back to our cabin. Once we got back, we started fishing right away—but word must have spread to the other fish, as we spent an hour and a half fishing with no luck. Just as darkness was setting in and everything was seeming hopeless, Robin saved the day and caught the biggest pollock we had seen yet! We spent the rest of the evening cozy inside the cabin, celebrating our luck.

Our last morning at the cabin started late with a refreshing swim and a hearty pancake breakfast. Then we slowly cleaned the cabin, gave fishing one more go, and said goodbye to our perfect little spot. In the afternoon we walked down to Hardbakke, hopped on the bus, then the ferry, and in no time, we were back in Bergen

A wonderful weekend in nature, spent hiking, swimming, and fishing!
