Snow cave trip to Hallingskeid

28. February - 01. March 2026

On Saturday morning, nine enthusiastic people left Bergen by train, carrying skis and snow shovels, heading for Hallingskeid with the goal of building a snow cave to sleep in. The train was delayed by an hour, but spirits remained high as we arrived and stepped out into bright sunshine and surprisingly mild weather.

From the station, we began searching for a spot with deep enough snow for our project. After several attempts — and quite a few falls into the snow — we eventually found a location that seemed suitable. Before starting the real work, we sat down for lunch in the sun. What followed was around eight hours of steady shoveling. Snow was moved, walls were shaped, and gradually a proper cave began to take form.

After a delicious dinner of tikka masala with slightly burned rice, we had built a solid snow cave with sleeping spaces for five people. Of the nine participants, five chose to spend the night in the cave, while four opted for the nearby cabin. On Sunday, we took things more slowly. We enjoyed the sunshine, practiced some fjellski, and relaxed after the long and physically demanding day before. In the afternoon, we boarded the train back to Bergen, tired but satisfied with what we had built together.
