Trad climbing with WildVoss
19 - 21. September 2025
After intensely monitoring the weather forecast for multiple days, the amount of rain decreased slightly, and Carlos from WildVoss gave us the green light for the trad climbing course. To exercise caution, we booked a cabin in Voss instead of taking our tents, though. All was set for a great weekend of climbing!
On Saturday morning, we hiked up the south side of Lønahorgi until it got steeper and steeper. More scrambling than climbing terrain, but ideal to learn how to place cams and nuts without having to worry about bad footholds and the like. First, our instructors, Carlos and Are, showed us how to place protection, build anchors, and belay from the top, and we practiced for a bit on the ground. Afterward, we split up into teams and climbed four pitches on our own protection, while Carlos and Are went from team to team, checking that everything was placed well and helping if needed.
In the meantime, the sky had cleared up, so we got to enjoy a beautiful view of the valley from high up the mountain. Much more fun to wait for your climber to figure things out while belaying this way.
On Sunday, we drove to a crag down in the valley. Here, we climbed both sport multi-pitch and lead trad. The latter with additional top-rope belaying, though.
It was an exciting course, with a lot to learn, great people to share belay anchors with, good dinners with climbing stories at the campground, and great instructors.
Thanks to all the participants and to WildVoss!
