Via Øykjafonn til Kaldavasshytta
22 - 23. January 2025
We took the train early on a Saturday to Upsete where we started our ski tour up to Øykjafonn (1604 m). The sun was shining and the conditions looked promising, but we faced a very strong headwind for the entire ascent. Shortly before reaching the top, we decided to do a shortcut and ski down to the cabin Kaldavasshytta, as the remaining part to the top would only have been flat and again in a headwind. The way down the north-east side of Øykjafonn was a bit icy but then we had at least some softer snow further down. Navigating down was a bit challenging, as there is some steeper terrain and cliffs that need to be avoided. The wind was in fact so strong that day, that the outer door of the cabin fell off when someone tried to open it!
After almost 6 hours, including a break halfway, we arrived at the cabin where we had a very delicious risotto and even saw some northern lights later during the evening.
The next day, we split the group into two: One group did the ascent to Øykjafonn again, but from the south side and the other group took the shorter marked winter route down to the train station. With a strong tail wind this time, it took us only 2h30 to go all the way from Kaldavasshytta to Upsete over Øykjafonn. We met the rest of the group at the train station and took the train back to Bergen together.
Takk for turen!
